Amiga mit 14Bit und 48khz Audio Quality

Hallo Leute,

heute bin ich zufällgerweiser über einen sehr interessanten Thread im Apollo Core Forum gestoßen. Da geht es um den neuen Core und das dann der Amiga über die Vampire 16bit Audio bekommt. Doch das eigentlich interessante war ein Posting in dem beschrieben wurde das mit der guten alte Paula ab A500+ es möglich ist 14Bit Audio mit 48kHz abzuspielen. Ich wusste bis dahin das man mit AHI und 14Bit Calibrated max 22,7kHz bekommt aber wenn der Amiga in einem double scan display mode (DBLPAL, Productivity etc.) ist bekommt man bei der Paula auch 48kHz hin. Ich habe es ausprobiert und es ist unglaublich wie klar sich plötzlich mp3s auf den Amiga anhören (68060 oder Vampire vorausgesetzt). Da bin ich jetzt total Platt das solch ein alter Soundchip wie die Paula das leisten kann. Hätte ich das mal früher gewusst

Any Amiga can do 14 Bit. The Amiga chipset has two analog lowpass filters after the DAC. The stronger one with an effective frequency limit around 7 kHz (also called "LED filter" in some places) can be switched off. The second RC lowpass filter is fixed. That one is responsible for the "muffled" sound when replaying high rate content like MP3 or Wav.

Please note that it takes some configuration to get 44 Khz (up to 57 kHz) sampling rate out of the Amiga. Starting with ECS (A500+,A600 and later), the Amiga can play at more than approx. 28 kHz. The trick is: the Amiga chipset must be in a double scan display mode (DBLPAL, Productivity etc.). When running Picasso96, only a single environment variable needs to be set (from CLI):

SetEnv EnvArcicasso96/AmigaVideo 31kHz

With this setting, you can use higher sampling rates (after a reboot). AHI will honor this setting, too (and actually check for it before switching high sampling rates on).
